Saturday morning half an hour before the last match I was inspecting the playing rooms when I discovered that on table 17 the identifying sign had been replaced with a sign of '16+'. The match scheduled on table 17 was Italy versus Turkey and upon further investigation I discovered that the Italian captain was superstitious of the number 17 and for this reason he had changed it. When I met with the Turkish captain a few minutes later I felt obliged to ask him to ensure that his team beat the Italians. How else can we rid the Italian captain of these superstitions?
