Only a heart lead beats this - and North found it!

However, this ending materialised:

North was hopelessly squeezed when the A was cashed. Well played, declarer!   +1440

QUIZ: Where did the defense go wrong?

Solution:

Have a look at trick 6: South played his 10. This effectively "transfered the menace" to North, and North got very busy indeed looking after dummy's 8 as well as the diamonds.

If South played a small heart instead, chalk up -1.
