Beat 4 looking at all 4 hands

The South African InterClub teams played on BridgeBase have begun in January. Here is a hand played by Michael Bernstein of Johannesburg (playing for The Links) against the Kenyan team.

Michael, West, opens an acol 2 and Barbara Smith, East, gives the courtesy 2NT.

In the other room the Kenyan West also reaches 4 (after a strong 2 opening) and Roz Bernstein (Michael's better half) leads the K. Declarer ducks this, and Roz smartly switches to a trump. When the smoke cleared, Roz and Gita gained +100.

Michael also received the K lead. He won the ace immediately and advanced a heart to the king. South wins the ace.

QUIZ:   How do you beat 4 now?

Solution:

The way to beat this hand to continue with a small club to partner, then a trump from partner and you need to play small.

But Michael made 10 tricks when South switched to the 6 after taking the A. Michael ducked it to dummy and then played Q - J (discarding a and a ).   North ruffs this but is now stymied.   North continued with a top club but Michael ruffed this and exited with... the K!! Michael was now assured of a diamond ruff!

Well played, Michael!
